Overclocking Duron for GIGABYTE GA-7ZX series

I will explain how to change clock multiplier and core voltage of GIGABYTE GA-7ZX series. (September, 2001)

There is no function of overclocking in GIGABYTE GA-7ZX series.

This report was tested with the following product.

This is the surface of Duron, and expansion of L1 bridges. bridges L1-L4

In order to confirm the function of overclocking, it is required to close L1 bridge.

In order to close L1 bridge, please use conductive ink or a pencil.


Socket A - details -

Please cut the circuit pattern of FID signal and VID signal here.
Here is the connection point of the BP_FID signal and VCC-CORE.

The connecting point to FIDs

ZXH
Connect FID signal from a control switch to the leg of Q35, Q36, Q37, and Q38 between a power supply connector and LED.



The connecting point to VIDs

ZXH
Connect the VID signal from a control switch to the pattern of U19 between a printer port and CPU.


Generally, in order to control VID, it is necessary to cut a pattern on Motherboard's reverse-side. However, VID signal of CPU is separable if RN118 and R451 shown by the yellow frame is removed. In this case,the VID pattern does not need to be cut.


Procedure

  • The procedure in the case of Overclocking is as follows.

  • Close the L1 bridges.
  • Cut the pattern of FID, and the pattern of VID.
  • Make a control circuit with a switch.
  • Connect the following parts from the control circuit.

  • VCC-CORE and GND.
  • VID circuit.
  • FID circuit.
  • BP_FID circuit.
  • Connecting is checked, and it is completion if correct.






The control circuit using DIP-SW is shown below.

Multiplier & CoreVoltage Control

Please make a control circuit with a switch.




BP_FID-SW(a) and (b) is used considering two pieces as 1 set.
When attaching BP_FID (b), the upper and lower sides are made reverse.
This is because(a)and(b)must be surely reverse setup.

By this method, these two switches can be set up in the same direction.

With a photograph, although it is OFF electrically when BP_FID(b)-SW is turned up, it treats as ON for convenience.

Moreover, 50-100-ohm resistance is attached to a BP_FID (b) side in preparation for a setting mistake.

This chart shows the case where DIP-SW of No. 5(VID [0]) is always ON.

* A red character is the defolt Voltage of Duron/Athlon.

Oveclocking Test - GA-7ZX-H rev5.1 -

Surprisingly, even if it was set to 1066MHz(8X133), it operated. (V_core at this time is 1.85v).




Duron650 was used for this test of operation.
It fully operated from 500MHz to 1GHz.


By the test of change of VccVCORE, it operated from 1.35v to 1.85v.(Clock at this time is 650Mhz).
